Automatically balances data center airflow

SmartAire MZ dampers offer automatic balancing by delivering the right amount of air to the equipment at the right time to maintain the proper inlet temperature. The units adjust cooling independently to 4 separate zones of a rack.  This cools variable loads and partially deployed areas without wasting energy. Real time rack level monitoring and control of airflow improves decision making and reduces operating cost.

Understanding & Managing Diverse & Variable Loads

Each rack in the data center is a constantly changing due to the processing demands of the IT hardware at a given time. The improved efficiency of IT hardware over time has increased the difference between idle power consumption and 100% utilization driving up load variability. This fact, coupled with the increasing use of cloud computing, will only serve to drive increased load variability in the rack on a minute by minute basis, making manual tuning of the airflow at the panel level impossible.

SmartAire Solves the Problem

The solution has been to provide enough air to accommodate the peak energy demands of the rack.  This results in wasted bypass air and over-cooling during all less than peak conditions. SmartAire® MZ measures the air temperatures at the face of the rack and adjusts the VAV damper to control the airflow. This ensures that the temperature at the face of the rack is never above the  allowable set point provided by the user. When deployed using best practices, it offers the efficiency of aisle containment without rigid barriers and account for any local temperature fluctuations.

The BMS interface and DCIM integration allows for real time rack level monitoring. Allowing you to check the status of any unit and alter the settings from your desktop.

Static Pressure Control for Efficient Airflow in Containment

Constant airflow into a contained aisle with a variable load profile is inefficient.  Tate’s Aux-P (pressure sensing) module for the SmartAire MZ solves this situation.  When servers enter idle mode they draw less air, causing static pressure in a contained aisle to increase. Under positive pressure excessive air will be forced through servers even if the fans are idle.  SmartAire MZ Aux-P automatically modulates the dampers to control the static pressure in the aisle to a user defined set point.

On demand cooling for working in contained hot aisles

SmartAire T is designed to provide IT technicians the ability to control the temperature of the hot aisle when access to service equipment is required. Before the tech enters the hot aisle the units are activated by a user supplied trigger. Once powered on the units allow cool plenum air to enter the hot aisle until the predetermined safe working temperature is established. When the desired temperature has been reached the tech can comfortably work in the contained aisle without breaks until they have completed their tasks. SmartAire T units will maintain this temperature until the units are deactivated by the technician.

OSHA exposure limits for working environments indicate a certain ratio of rest and work when working in high temperatures. These regulations may suggest periods of rest that limit the amount of time a person can work. Further to the limitations provided by OSHA it is important to create a comfortable working environment as some individuals may have a lower tolerance to heat.

Multi-zone Opposed Blade Damper

Efficiently manage airflow to partially deployed racks

The Multi-zone Opposed Blade Damper allows for delivery of air only to where load is present, and confining airflow to where there is none. The reduction in airflow volume as a result of closing off airflow to unused sections of racks reduces energy expenditure at the CRAC unit level.

The Multi-zone Opposed Blade Damper enables individuals responsible for the physical infrastructure to deliver air where the IT user has servers and equipment installed, but restrict airflow delivery into zones where no blanking panels and no equipment is installed. Divided into three zones, (top, middle and bottom) each zone of the manual damper can be adjusted from the surface without removing the Airflow panel for fast accurate balancing to the fixed IT loads.

Tate’s Dual-zone Opposed Blade Damper is designed for use with the DirectAire X2 in single width airflow panel aisles. The dual zone damper allows the user to control the airflow through each half of a panel independently so that racks on opposite sides of the aisle can receive the right amount of cooling for the load in the rack.

Single-zone Opposed Blade Damper

Increase airflow control range by 30% over slide dampers

Tate’s Single-zone Opposed Blade Damper offers a dramatic airflow improvement over traditional manual slide dampers. It features a nearly infinite range of adjustment and very little airflow resistance. Easy access through the panel’s surface allows for quick adjustment of the damper for accurate airflow balancing for IT hardware with fixed airflow requirements. The damper’s drop-in design allows for easy installation by decoupling the damper from the panel. This means that standard, undampered directional airflow panels can be ordered as needed, with separate opposed blade dampers purchased as necessary.

Tate’s slide damper can be factory attached to standard perforated panels for manual airflow adjustments. The slide damper is mechanically attached to the panel to provide airflow control. The design of the damper means it will fit into most existing data centers, or new build applications.

Tate’s PowerAire fan assist module is designed to provide a blast of cooling through an individual airflow panel. Multiple Control options are available to automatically turn on when conditions require additional cooling. Equipped with a variable speed fan drive the fan can be throttled up or down based on the heat load requirements.

Offers built in redundancy

The PowerAire Quad fan assist module is equipped with 4 fans connected in parallel to provide built in redundancy. This unit is only 4” deep making it ideal  for retrofit situations with finished floor heights as low as 7.5”. Multiple control options are available to  automatically turn on the fan when conditions require additional cooling.
